Lee Yi Shyan is new Singapore Badminton Association president

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s governing body for badminton has a new president.

Mr Lee Yi Shyan, who is also the Minister of State for Trade and Industry, takes over the helm from outgoing president and NTUC Secretary—General, Mr Lim Swee Say, who has headed the association for six years.

Looking forward, Mr Lee says he wants to build a system to groom more winners, widen interest in badminton through schools and clubs, create a badminton industry that has a financing model by involving sponsors and various industry.

He also wants to strengthen the association.

All these, he hopes, can ultimately propel Singapore to win games in Asia.

Mr Lee said: "We are talking about very high standard games, because most of the strongest countries are in Asia. It is a bit like the current Euro Cup for soccer, because the strongest teams are there. To do well in Southeast Asia, to do well in Asia....are a big recognition." — CNA/ir
